This week I am featuring a small cemetery located a little south of the town of Bona, in southwest Missouri. There are 61 graves here and only 2 does not have a headstone. This is pretty rare. The cemetery is situated at the edge of the woods and there is lots of rolling green grass covering it.
I have 14 ancestors buried here, so over the next few weeks, I will be posting a photo of their headstone and give a short biography about each one.
Ozina Friend is my maternal 3rd cousin 2 times removed. She was born on April 16, 1875, in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. She was the seventh of nine children born to John Wesley Friend Jr (1844-1921) and Margaret Divine (1852-1948. She married John William Lamb (1875-1943) on April 17, 1875, and they had three children, one son, and two daughters. They made their home on a farm outside the town of Morgan. She died on June 9, 1905, at the age of 30. Her husband was buried in another cemetery in the county.
Arthur Taylor Friend is my maternal 3rd cousin 2 times removed. He was born on May 20, 1886, in Dade County, Missouri. He was the sixth of nine children born to John Wesley Friend Jr (1844-1921) and Margaret Divine (1852-1948). He married Myrtle Montgomery (1891-1971) on April 11, 1906, and they had four children, one son, and two daughters and one child who died at birth. They made their home on a cattle ranch outside the town of Morgan. He moved his family to Mansfield, Missouri in 1912 where he pioneered the Mansfield Mining District. He was Vice President and general manager of A.T. Friend Mining Co. He also owned the town drug store as well as many other businesses and properties in the county. He was a member of the Fuson Camp # 611 and The Woodsmen of the World. He was murdered on June 30, 1918, at the age of 32. (I will be writing a blog about this incident in the near future). Myrtle remarried and moved to California.
