Mondays for Me #39 ~ My UFO Encounter

In 1968 my family was living in Independence, Missouri. We had moved there the year before from Tucson, Arizona, and it was like going to a different world. We lived in a small 2 bedroom in the East side of town. The street, which ran north and south, was divided by some railroad tracks. Just past this the street plunged into a steep hill, and our house was the second one past the tracks. My sister and I shared a bedroom that had a window facing east and I loved watching all the birds that gathered in the trees by the road.

This was also the time when my mother started showing signs of her mental illness. She had always been interested in the supernatural, but as her illness progressed so did her curiosity. She dragged my sister into it, and they spent their time reading about ghosts, witchcraft and UFO’s. Because of all of the talk in the news about space travel, and sending someone to the moon, I started reading the books about UFO’s and I was fascinated!

One night, about mid-summer, my sister woke me up and told me she thought she saw something flying around in the sky out the window. I jumped out of bed and ran to the window. Sure enough, there in the distance was some strange lights hovering in the horizon. After about a minute, it began to move slowly to the right and then it just disappeared!

We stood at the window for about 5 minutes, and then we saw it again. This time it was moving toward the left, this time with more speed. The lights were blinking faster, and just as quickly as it appeared, it disappeared. We stood watching the horizon, hoping that it would reappear. After what seemed lie an eternity, there it was again, this time it was closer and this time we could hear a humming noise. My sister wanted to go get our Dad, but she was frozen with fear. I didn’t want to miss anything so I just ignored her.

The noise got louder and the flashing lights got brighter. It was coming from the south this time and the lights were so bright I closed my eyes. When I opened them, there it was right in front of our house…….a large street sweeper!

I went to bed laughing my head off. The next morning, I told my Dad, and he had a good laugh about it. He took my sister and I to our bedroom window, and he pointed at the horizon where we saw the “craft”. He showed us how the streets in that direction are elevated above ours since we slope down. So, when the sweeper was moving up and down the streets it appeared like it was in the sky. I asked him why we never saw it before, and he told me “because they only sweep the streets in the summertime here”.

Every time I watch a program about Alien’s my mind goes back to that fateful evening that I encountered my own UFO.

  1. Very entertaining story! I had a similar childhood experience of seeing what was probably an airplane, but so high up that it looked like a silver disc to me and my playmates. I rushed inside for I’m little Instamatic camera and took pictures…but when they came back there was nothing on them! Last year, at a neighborhood reunion, on of my now-retired friends reminded me of it and we had a good laugh.
